The USKFI Senior Squad took part in the second of this year's Grand Slam competitions against England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland last weekend. The competition is used for squads to gain experience of competition using international rules.
There were some exciting matches with several of the USKFI competitors progressing through the rounds. Erris Keane, in particular, secured her place in the final with some spirited matches in the eliminations. Erris came away with Joint Third after an exciting match against Caroline McGrath of England. The women's team also performed particularly well, securing their place in the final after a decisive win against Wales. The Ireland ladies fought well and were just pipped to the post to gain a very credible second place.
Coaches Michael Sherlock and David Royle were very pleased with the team's overall performance, with individual improvements in both kata and kumite. A team of seniors and juniors will compete at the KUGB's Shotokan Cup in September, the first time a non-KUGB team has been invited to compete. We wish them the best of luck.
